Proximity Privacy Policy

Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 20, 2026

Welcome to Proximity ("we," "us," or "our"). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use and share it, and the choices you have when you use our mobile application, Proximity (the "App"). Please read it carefully. If you do not agree with it, please do not use the App.

Contents

1
Information We Collect
  • Account information: email address, password (kept in protected form by our sign-in provider), display name, age, bio, interests, a location description you choose to write, and the profile photos you add.
  • Verification: if you verify your profile, Stripe checks your ID and a selfie. Stripe collects those, not Proximity. We only receive the result (verified or not) and show a verified badge.
  • Messages: your one-to-one and group messages are end-to-end encrypted (see section 2). We store the locked message, who sent it, who or which group it is for, and when.
  • Chat activity: your conversations, group memberships and invitations, chats you have cleared, and when you last read each chat (so read receipts and unread counts work), and the disappearing-message timer set for each chat.
  • Friends and safety: friend requests and friendships, people you block or mute, and reports you send us.
  • Ad rewards: if you choose to watch a rewarded ad, we record that it was completed and what it earned you (the type of reward, when, and a one-time ad ID from Google), so each ad counts once and the daily limits work.
  • Profile views: when another user views your profile, we record who and when. Premium members can see this.
  • Last active: roughly when you last opened the App. You can choose whether others see it.
  • Bluetooth signal: while Proximity is scanning, your phone broadcasts a short code based on the first part of your account ID so nearby Proximity phones can recognize you. A phone that picks it up asks our servers whose profile it is and shows what that person has chosen to share.
  • Location: your phone's location is used on your phone to draw the live map, record encounters, and apply Privacy zones. We do not upload your GPS coordinates or keep a history of them on our servers.
  • Saved on your phone only: your encounter history (including where an encounter happened), Privacy zones, and encounter settings stay on your phone. We never receive them.
  • Support and AI help: bug reports you send, and the questions you type into the in-app help chat.
  • Device and security information: the model name of each phone you use for secure messaging (up to five), the app version and device details in a bug report, and simple counts of recent actions (like messages sent) that we use to stop spam and abuse.
2
Messages and Encryption
  • Your one-to-one and group messages are locked on your phone before they are sent, and can only be unlocked on the phones of the people in that chat. The keys that unlock them are kept on your phone, not on our servers.
  • Proximity cannot read your messages. We can see who messaged whom (or which group), when, and roughly how long the message is.
  • Messages sent before we added encryption were stored in readable form. They stay visible to you and the other people in those chats until the accounts involved are deleted.
  • Your key lives only on your phone. If you reinstall Proximity, clear its data, or switch phones, you get a new key and cannot read earlier messages. We cannot recover them.
  • People in a chat can copy, screenshot, or share what you send. Group members see messages sent after they joined.
  • Disappearing messages: anyone in a chat can set a timer, from 5 minutes to 4 weeks. It starts when a message is sent and only applies to messages sent after the timer was set. When time runs out, the message can no longer be opened and we erase its text and its lock. We keep an empty record that a message was sent (who sent it, to whom or which group, and when) so our spam limits and replying rules keep working. A timer does not stop anyone from copying or taking a screenshot before a message disappears, and a report keeps the messages you chose to include in it.
  • Reports: when you report a chat or a group, you choose whether to include recent messages. Only what you choose to include is sent to us, and we cannot open the locked originals to check it. If you include nothing, we only receive your report.
  • Limits: to protect people from spam, we limit how many messages, chats, groups, invitations, and friend requests an account can send in a short time.
3
How We Use Your Information
  • Operate core App features including proximity detection, the live map, encounter history, messaging, group chats, and friend connections.
  • Show your profile to other people according to your privacy settings.
  • Process and manage your Premium subscription.
  • Count the rewards you earn from rewarded ads and apply the daily limits.
  • Verify profiles, if you choose to verify.
  • Keep people safe: review reports, block spam and abuse, and enforce our Terms of Service.
  • Show in-app alerts about friend requests, group invitations, and new messages while the App is open. You can hide message previews under Settings > Messaging Privacy.
  • Respond to support requests and bug reports, and answer questions in the in-app help chat.
  • We do not use your location or message content for advertising. We cannot read your messages.
4
How We Share Your Information
  • Other users: your name, photo, bio, age, interests, verified badge, location description, and when you were last active may be shown to other people. Your privacy settings control what appears.
  • Group members: people in a group can see each other's names and photos. They see messages sent after they joined.
  • Supabase: stores your account, profile, photos, friendships, groups, and locked messages, and runs our sign-in and server functions.
  • Mapbox: draws the map. It receives requests for the part of the map you are viewing, which shows roughly where you are.
  • RevenueCat, Google Play, and the Apple App Store: manage Premium subscriptions and validate purchases.
  • Stripe: checks your ID and selfie if you choose to verify your profile.
  • Google AdMob: shows rewarded video ads to free accounts, only when you choose to watch one. Google may collect your phone's advertising ID, IP address (which shows roughly where you are), and how you interact with the ad, to show and measure ads and prevent fraud, under Google's own privacy policy. Where the law requires it, Google asks for your consent first, and you can reset your advertising ID in your phone's settings. We do not send Google your profile, messages, or location. Premium members do not see ads.
  • Anthropic: powers the in-app help chat. The questions you type there are sent to Anthropic's Claude model to write a reply. We do not send your profile, messages, or location.
  • Resend: delivers the alert emails we receive when someone sends a report. They include the details in the report.
  • Legal and safety: we may disclose data if required by law or valid legal process, or to protect someone from serious harm.
  • We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. The only advertising in the App is the rewarded video ads you choose to watch, provided by Google AdMob as described above.
5
Privacy Zones and Data on Your Phone

Your encounter history, Privacy zones, and encounter settings are saved only on your phone. They are not sent to us and are never shared with other users. When you create a Privacy zone, your device automatically pauses Bluetooth scanning and stops generating encounter events within that area. Deleting the App or clearing its data removes them for good.

6
Data Retention and Deletion
  • Account and profile data is kept until you delete your account.
  • Messages are kept until the account of the sender or the receiver is deleted. Deleting a conversation only removes it from your own view; the other person keeps their copy. Group messages stay until the sender's account is deleted or the group no longer exists.
  • Messages sent with a disappearing-message timer are erased when the timer runs out (usually within a minute). Only an empty record of who sent it, to whom or which group, and when is kept, until the accounts involved are deleted.
  • Reports, and the alert emails we receive about them, are kept for as long as we need them for safety and legal reasons.
  • Counts of recent actions used to stop spam are cleared on a rolling basis and contain no message content.
  • Records of rewarded ads (which reward, when, and Google's one-time ad ID) are deleted after 60 days, or sooner when you delete your account. What you have earned (such as assistant answers or map time) is deleted with your account.
  • When you delete your account in the App, we delete your profile, photos, messages, friendships, group memberships, and other account data from our systems. Copies in backups are removed within 30 days, except where the law requires us to keep something.
7
Data Security

We use encrypted data transmission (HTTPS/TLS), secure authentication, and access controls to protect your data. Your messages are also end-to-end encrypted, and the keys are kept in your phone's secure storage. Anyone who can unlock your phone can read your chats, so keep it locked. No method of electronic storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

8
Your Rights and Choices

  • California residents: you may have additional rights under the CCPA, including the right to know what data is collected and the right to request deletion. Contact us to exercise these rights.

We are not responsible for the privacy practices of third-party websites or services linked from the App.

11
Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the effective date and, where appropriate, sending a notice within the App. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance.
